G.L. Pease Horizons

The latest in G.L. Pease’s Zeitgeist series, Horizons is a flake of Turkish Latakia, Red Virginia, Bright Virginia, and Orientals. Smoky, sweet, and savory with notes of mesquite, steak sauce, earth, and leather, with occasional hints of citrus. The retrohale is smoky with a light pepper spice. The finish is rich with notes of leather, earth, and cedar, with a lingering spice.

As the bowl progresses, the sweetness fades, and the smoky mesquite becomes more prominent, along with notes of leather and espresso. The spice mellows in the retrohale as well. It is medium to full in body and a low medium in strength.

Truth be told, I am not a big smoker of Latakia blends. I think I burned myself out when I started pipe smoking after going through several sleeves worth of Night Cap. Yet, I sincerely found myself enjoying this blend. It is very smooth and well-balanced, with evolving nuances that kept my attention piqued. If you enjoy English blends, this is well worth a try, and I am sure you will find that it is not just blowing smoke. Highly recommended.
