HU Tobacco Dark Moor

HU Tobacco is a German company founded by master blender Hans Wiedemann, with a strong following in the pipe community. Thanks to a new relationship with Laudisi Enterprises, HU tobaccos are now available in the US domestic market for the first time in 100g tins.

Dark Moor is a ribbon-cut blend of Brown Virginia, Kentucky, and Perique. Upon opening the tin, I detected notes of barnyard, cocoa, and fruit. The tobacco seemed a bit damp and might benefit from a short drying time before lighting, but that proved not to be the case.

Dark Moor is, true to its name, dark and rich, with woody, smoky, cocoa, and walnut notes, and a smoky black and red pepper spice in the retrohale. It is full-bodied and strong. The finish is thick on the palate, with notes of smoked nuts, plum, and wood. In the back half of the bowl, it becomes creamier, with flavors of cashew and smoky chocolate.

Dark Moor is a well-balanced and full-bodied blend with a lot going on. As a lover of Kentucky, this blend was definitely not just blowing smoke for me, and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy similar blends or blends that are solidly on the full-bodied and full-strength spectrum.
