“Are you serious?” Yes I am! The marketing campaign for the video game, Batman: Arkham Knight, and its tag line, “Be the Batman,” was essentially a call to become disciples of the Batman. In one live action TV commercial in particular, this was about as plain as you could get. In each scenario in the commercial, people who exemplified selflessness, determination, courage, and being feared, are held up as role models because they have become like the Batman. They owned his mission, shared his vision, and lived his values; and because of that, his image was clearly seen by those around them.
Biblical discipleship is just as simple. I In this sermon, I explore the meaning of the meaning of discipleship Matthew 22:36-40, Matthew 28:19-20, and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. The goal of Christian discipleship is to become like Jesus: to own His mission (the Great Commission), share His vision (The Great Commandment), and live by His values (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
The Church doesn’t need any more gimmicks! It doesn’t need any more team t-shirts, ball caps, or WWJD bracelets. We have way too many of those…and they have not really done much good. What it needs is for you and me to be real, intentional, and committed disciples of Jesus; people who do more than just wear the shirts, sport the bumper stickers, and know the talking points; people whose lives backs up their profession; people who when they speak or act leave behind the unmistakable impression, “that person is like Jesus.”
