Lessons from TP

I have a sign at home that says, “Everyone wants to change the world. But nobody wants to change the toilet paper roll. Be the change.” It is hanging right above where the toilet paper is, and also right over the trash can. This bathroom is set up in such a way that with near negligible effort, one could change the TP in just a few seconds, without even having to get up. And yet sadly, it seems that this sign is not just there for a smile, but as a lesson waiting to be learned. What is the lesson, you ask? First, the sign sets forth the desire we all have: “Everyone wants to change the world.” We all want to do significant things, things that make a difference, a real difference. Second, the sign reveals the root of the problem, the reason why we aren’t seeing that happen: “But nobody wants to change the toilet paper roll.” And finally, it offers the solution. “Be the change.” In other words, change the roll! The first step to making the world a better place is to make the bathroom a better place by changing the toilet paper roll when it is bare. It is a small thing that makes a big difference; not only for you, but for everyone else living in the house. I have been learning that to make positive Godward change, I have to be willing to make the effort to change myself, to overcome my natural inclination to not bother responding to change. Deuteronomy 1:19-40 teaches us that there will be times when God brings you to a place where everything is going to change. When we come to those places we have to decide if we are going to trust Him through it and join Him in what He is doing…or not. Are we willing to change and do accept change? If God is behind all this change, and I don’t mean “if” as in a question. I mean it in that logical if-then sense. God is behind the change. And if God is behind this change, then what does our response to change reveal about what we are holding on to, what we need to let go of, and what we continue to need to hold on to?
