Samuel Gawith’s Brown No. 4

Samuel Gawith’s Brown No. 4 is a robust blend featuring Dark Fired Kentucky, cigar leaf, and Virginias presented in a twist format. This twist tobacco is known for its strong, intense, and bold flavors.

Upon lighting, the initial taste is bold and intense. It is earthy, smoky, and spicy, with a dark, smoky fruity sweetness on the finish. I also notice nutty and roasted nuts flavors, along with dark caramel.

As I progress down the bowl, the tobacco becomes creamier, introducing notes of rye bread, smoky paprika-like spice, and stewed fruit. The cigar leaf is prominent, adding charred oak notes. In the latter half, the flavors remain rich but become less stark and straightforward. The retrohale offers black pepper and charred oak, while the finish is smoky with hints of nuts, oak, earth, and dark fruit sweetness.

Being a twist (also referred to as rope) tobacco Brown No. 4 requires some added preparation, and may benefit from drying time depending on its moisture content. However, the extra effort is well worth it for the exceptional smoking experience it provides. Samuel Gawith’s Brown No. 4 is a bold, full-bodied powerhouse of a blend that I highly recommend. Definitely not just blowing smoke!
