Gawith Hoggarth’s Sweet Peach

Gawith Hoggarth’s Sweet Peach is a ribbon blend of Virginia, Burley, and Cavendish with a light peach topping. The tin note is sweet but not as “peachy” as I expected. It is almost like a peach meringue. The tobacco is very moist but lights up fairly well right out of the tin, though a few minutes of drying time might be beneficial to some.

Notes of cream and peach are apparent from the start. The room note is pleasantly sweet, with more cream and vanilla than peach. While the notes of peaches and cream are not as heavy as I expected, they are the major players. The Virginias add stone fruit, hay, and light white bread notes. The Burley brings some light nuttiness, wood, and earth, and the Cavendish contributes to the creamy sweetness of the blend. The Virginia starts to come forward more as the bowl progresses and complements and deepens the peach topping. About halfway through, the Burley becomes more apparent as well, with notes of chocolate, earth, and nuts. There is a bit of brown sugar sweetness as well, which is likely the Cavendish talking. All these flavors marry with the peach, which, while not ever as strong as I expected, has nevertheless served as the main theme in the blend, with the tobaccos supporting it.

I am not a regular aromatic smoker. I think that is because I started with cigars and remain a cigar smoker as well. I have found that often what you smell in the tin is not what you taste when you light it up. I have also found that some aromatics have a distinct waxiness on the finish left from the toppings used that turns me off. However, neither of these can be said of Gawith Hoggarth’s Sweet Peach. It was curiously pleasurable, well-balanced, and blended to bring together notes and flavors that both support and complement the prominent yet gentle and sweet peach flavor. It was not just blowing smoke but left me thinking about having a second bowl. Highly recommended.
