The Antaño Dark Corojo El Martillo from Joya de Nicaragua is a Nicaraguan purp that is described at their website as ” the embodiment of the Nicaraguan “power” cigar.”
- Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo Oscuro
- Binder: Nicaraguan
- Filler: Nicaraguan
- Size: Robusto Extra 5 1/2 x 54
The Corojo Oscuro wrapper is a deeper brown hue with a smooth texture and a light oily sheen to it. The draw is excellent. There are no soft spots or perceived imperfections in construction either.
Upon lighting, the cigar reveals a rich profile of earth, coffee, and charred oak, complemented by mineral notes and a robust black pepper presence. The retrohale intensifies the experience with a blend of black and red pepper, which also lingers on the finish. The ash is gray and firm, holding for about an inch before falling off cleanly.

As the cigar progresses, flavors of wood and caramel emerge, adding a nice sweetness to the finish. The coffee notes remain consistent throughout the smoke, providing a balanced and enjoyable experience.
The cigar is full-bodied and full-strength, offering a straightforward yet engaging profile that keeps the taste buds entertained. It is certainly a powerful cigar, and has rightfully received positive reviews over the last 15 years. While certainly strong and rich, the El Martillo is not overly complex, yet has enough going on to convince you that you are not just blowing smoke. Its consistency and rich flavors make it a recommended choice, especially for those who appreciate a strong cigar.
