Haddo’s Delight is a blend of Virginia, Perique, Burley, and Black Cavendish from Greg Pease. The tin description informs you that it undergoes an “exclusive process [that] darkens and marries the mixture.” I am thinking that refers to the flavor profile, because the tobaccos themselves (other than the Perique) do not look darker that I can tell. The tin note offers aromas of raisin, fig, stone fruit, and some chocolate.
After lighting emerge notes of cocoa, walnuts, raisins, and a light black pepper spice in the retrohale. The finish is lightly sweet and earthy, with flavors of fig, wood, and a hint of cream and brown sugar from the Green River Black Cavendish.
As the bowl progresses, the blend becomes more woody and less sweet, with notes of fig, earth, dark unsweetened cocoa, and a raisin-like spice. The retrohale becomes more peppery, and the finish has undertones of dark plum.
Towards the end of the bowl, the sweetness ramps up again, reminding me of the sweetness of black grapes, along with raisin, cocoa, and earth. The retrohale is woody and peppery, but not as much as in the middle of the bowl. The finish features wood, dark chocolate, and figs.
G.L. Pease Haddo’s Delight is one of those blends I keep going back to over and over again. If you like Perique, this blend delivers a complex and nuanced experience. When you finish a bowl, you know that you were not just blowing smoke! Highly recommended.
