Samuel Gawith Navy Flake

Samuel Gawith Navy Flake is a blend of Virginia and Latakia tobaccos, pressed with a hint of rum. The tin note was slightly musty and smoky with hints of raisins and spice.

The initial flavors are reminiscent of mesquite, steak sauce, stewed fruit, citrus, and rye bread. After the first few minutes however, the profile shifts, with the stewed fruit and rye taking center stage, while the smoky mesquite and steak sauce move to the background but remain noticeable.

As with all Samuel Gawith blends, Navy Flake requires more than the average number of relights, especially if you fold the flakes into your bowl. Rubbing it out first makes it easier to manage. The retrohale reveals traces of rum along with a raisin-like spice. The finish is sweet, like brown sugar, with notes of stone fruits and rye bread. It’s very smooth, with a medium to medium-plus body and medium strength. The Latakia is quite light, adding just a bit of smokiness to the Virginias. As the bowl progresses, the retrohale becomes spicier.

Samuel Gawith’s Navy Flake is not so much complex as it is consistent. And that is not a knock. The flavor profile is very enjoyable and is rich enough to keep your tastebuds occupied. If you enjoy navy-style blends, this one is worth seeking out. It is not just blowing smoke and recommended.
