The Troublemaker

The Troublemaker is the latest line extension to JC Newman’s Diamond Crown Julius Ceaser line. The cigar was given the name because of the difficulty in making the shape. Apparently, “troublemaker” is a tame translation of the moniker it had in development at the factory.

Wrapper: Ecuadorian
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Caribbean, Central America
Size: Perfecto 5 3/4 x 52

The Julius Caeser Troublemaker features a coffee brown wrapper with a slightly toothy texture. The construction looks solid, and the wrapper has a slight oily sheen to it. The cold draw offers notes of earth, coffee, cream, and cocoa.

The initial flavors present a mix of cocoa, barnyard, and leather. There is a touch of light black pepper and cinnamon spice, particularly noticeable in the retrohale. The draw is a bit on the tighter side but still acceptable to me, and the burn is even with a nice white ash that is not flaky. The finish is earthy and lightly sweet, with some dark caramel notes.

As the cigar progresses, the earth and cocoa notes become more pronounced, while the cinnamon spice fades yet remains noticeable in the retrohale. The body of the cigar lightens slightly towards the middle. The burn remains even, and the ash continues to hold well.

In the final third, the flavor profile shifts to include richer notes of coffee, dark cocoa, and earth, complemented by charred oak. The black pepper in the retrohale becomes more prominent, and the body of the cigar ramps back up to a fuller intensity. The finish retains a dark caramel-like sweetness. Throughout, the cigar maintained a great burn with no construction issues.

The Julius Caeser Troublemaker offers a complex and evolving flavor profile. Its excellent construction and burn characteristics make it a satisfying and enjoyable smoke from start to finish. If you appreciate a rich and nuanced cigar you should look it up, because the Troublemaker is not just blowing smoke—Highly recommended.
