JC Newman Yagua

The Yagua Toro is a visually unique cigar with its multi-sided, misshapen appearance that comes from being wrapped into bundles of 20 in royal palm leaves in lieu of going into individual presses after being rolled. The result is a bundle in which no two cigars look alike.

Wrapper: CT Broadleaf
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Size: Toro 6 x 54

The wrapper is smooth, with mottled hues ranging from light to medium browns. The draw is solid, offering initial notes of barnyard and leather.

Upon lighting, I picked out notes of cashews, cocoa, hay, and leather, complemented by a sweet baking spice and a caramel finish. The finish is smooth and creamy. The burn is a bit uneven, and the gray ash is somewhat flaky.

During the first third, construction issues necessitated several corrections, but the flavor profile remained consistent. As the cigar progressed, the flavors became less sweet and more woody, with the nutty notes fading away. The finish shortened as well, highlighting oak and mineral flavors.

In conclusion, the Yagua Toro has a rich and evolving flavor profile which I enjoyed. While the construction and burn issues prevented it from reaching the level of greatness that its hype suggests, I still find it to be not just blowing smoke. Recommended.
